The basis for creation is the substance, but also a cultural heritage that Mugnai has developed through literature, works of art, movies, ballets and operas. Fashion is not creation with an end in itself: it is a potpourri of sensations and emotions. Massimiliano Mugnai grew up with films by Luchino Visconti, of which his favourites are “Ludwig” and “Gruppo di Famiglia in un Interno” (Conversation Piece 1974), and Vittorio De Sica with “Il Giardino dei Finzi Contini” (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis 1970), and now Nicolas Winding Refn and Asghar Farhadi. Among the books that have developed his creativity are "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind, "Bright Lights, Big City" by Jay McInerney and the “Sartorialist” for fashion images. Among his other “loves” are also Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey and the photographer Miles Aldridge. His is a continuous research, and discovery, with an overwhelming thirst to imagine, for knowledge and creation: basically an endless adventure. As such is life.
